Apple Pre-FY26 Q4 Capital-Light Baseline: 2.24% CapEx/Revenue vs. Big Tech's 27.02%-49.53% Ahead of Nov 2 Earnings
Important Timing Note (As of October 30, 2026): Apple's FY26 Q4 (July–September 2026) earnings have not been released yet—the conference call is scheduled for November 2, 2026 at 14:00 PT (November 3, 2026 at 07:00 KST) [1]. Meanwhile, Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta Platforms, and Amazon have already reported their July–September 2026 quarters. Before Apple reports, I wanted to establish a clear, numbers-based verification baseline using Apple's most recent reported quarter (FY26 Q3, ended June 27, 2026) and the official FY26 Q4 outlook given on the July 30, 2026 earnings call [2][3].
- Apr–Jun 2026 Aligned Cash CapEx/Revenue Comparison: In the April–June 2026 quarter, Apple's cash CapEx was just 2.24% of revenue ($2.455B CapEx on $109.417B revenue), compared to Amazon 27.02%, Alphabet 37.50%, Microsoft 39.78%, and Meta 49.53% (and in July–September 2026, those four peers ranged from 38.26% to 52.54%) (Author calculation).
- FY26 Q4 Official Guidance Baseline (Given July 30, 2026): On the Q3 call, Apple guided FY26 Q4 revenue growth to +9%–11% YoY, operating expenses to $19.1B–$19.4B, and gross margin to 47%–48% (including roughly ~1%p from tariff refund timing). In FY26 Q3, Services gross margin was 75.6%.
- FY26 Q4 CapEx Verification Threshold ($3.534B–$3.599B): Apple's 9-month FY26 cumulative cash CapEx was $6.799B, and FY25 Q4 cash CapEx was $3.242B [4]. Applying the +9%–11% top-line growth rate to FY25 Q4 CapEx yields a baseline range of $3.534B–$3.599B to check against the upcoming FY26 10-K.
1. Aligned Period Comparison (Apr–Jun 2026): Apple 2.24% vs. Peers 27.02%–49.53%
Because Apple's July–September 2026 (FY26 Q4) figures are not out until November 2, the most rigorous way to compare capital intensity without mixing periods is to align all five companies on the April–June 2026 quarter, and then show the four cloud peers' newly reported July–September 2026 ratios alongside it (Author calculation from each company's Form 10-Q / 10-K):
| Company | Apr–Jun 2026 Cash CapEx / Revenue | Jul–Sep 2026 Cash CapEx / Revenue | Primary Filing Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple [2] | 2.24% (FY26 Q3: $2.455B / $109.417B) | Reports Nov 2, 2026 (14:00 PT) | Payments for acquisition of PP&E (9M FY26: $6.799B) |
| Amazon [11][12] | 27.02% (2Q26) | 38.26% (3Q26) | Purchases of PP&E on cash flow statement |
| Alphabet [7][8] | 37.50% (2Q26) | 40.25% (3Q26) | Purchases of PP&E on cash flow statement |
| Microsoft [5][6] | 39.78% (FY26 Q4) | 42.66% (FY27 Q1) | Additions to PP&E (cash flow statement) |
| Meta Platforms [9][10] | 49.53% (2Q26) | 52.54% (3Q26) | Purchases of PP&E on cash flow statement |
2. Three Numbers I Will Check When Apple Releases FY26 Q4 Results
- Whether FY26 Q4 Cash CapEx Crosses $3.534B–$3.599B: In FY25, full-year CapEx was $12.715B and 9M FY25 CapEx was $9.473B, meaning FY25 Q4 CapEx was $3.242B [4]. If FY26 Q4 CapEx grows in line with guided revenue (+9%–11% YoY), it will land near $3.534B–$3.599B; a figure well above that range would indicate accelerated Private Cloud Compute server outlays.
- Gross Margin Ex-Tariff Refund: Management guided FY26 Q4 gross margin to 47%–48%, which includes roughly ~1%p of benefit from tariff refund recognition. Checking how much of the margin holds from Services (which posted a 75.6% gross margin in FY26 Q3) versus hardware mix will be essential.
- Uncommenced Leases & Vendor Commitments in the FY26 10-K Footnotes: Even if cash CapEx stays near ~2–3% of revenue, I will check the FY26 Form 10-K commitments footnote to see whether off-balance-sheet data-center lease or third-party cloud compute obligations expanded materially.
